The Health and Social Care classrooms are found in the CM Block. Health and Scoial Care BTEC form part of the optional curriculum offer at KS4, with mixed ability grouping used. Students can elect to study Health and Social Care Level 3 as post-16 courses or apprenticeships.

What will the students learn in Health and Social Care?

BTEC Health and Social Care can help students take their first steps towards a career caring for people and communities. They will learn the essential skills needed to support people with a wide range of needs, from babies and toddlers to adults and the elderly. Over 3 million people work in health, social or early-years care and they play a key role in UK society. Demand for employees in this sector is high and is likely to increase further in the future.

How are the students assessed at GCSE?

Students complete a range of internal assignments over 3 topics, which is worth 75% of the final grade. 25% is an external 1 hour exam.

What is BTEC Health and Social Care like?

Unit 1 – Human Lifespan (externally assessed) In this unit, students will explore human growth and development across life stages. They will also investigate factors that affect human growth and development and how they are interrelated.

Unit 2 – Health and Social Care Values (internally assessed) In this unit, students will explore the care values that underpin current practice in health and social care. They will also investigate ways of empowering individuals who use health and social care services.

Unit 4 – Social Influences on Health and Wellbeing (internally assessed) In this unit, students will explore the effects of socialisation on the health and wellbeing of individuals. They will also understand the influences that relationships have on the health and wellbeing of individuals. In addition, students will investigate the effects of social factors on the health and wellbeing of individuals.

Unit 6 – The Impact of Nutrition on Health and Wellbeing (internally assessed) In this unit, students will explore the effects of balanced and unbalanced diets on the health and wellbeing of individuals. They will also understand the specific nutritional needs and preferences of individuals.
